Fiberglass Windows in Troy

Troy Windows sends fiberglass window requests to one independent local installer. Fiberglass frames are pultruded: glass fibers and resin pulled through a die into a hollow profile that barely changes size with temperature. Alongside them sit composite windows made from wood fiber and polymer, factory finishes from powder coat and paint to capstock, and frames strong enough for slim sightlines and heavy triple glass. They cost more than vinyl and less than wood in national price data.

Pultruded Fiberglass Frames

Pultrusion pulls glass-fiber roving and matting through a die while resin is injected, and heat cures the profile into a shape that won't soften later. DOE describes the result as dimensionally stable, with air cavities similar to vinyl that can be filled with insulation or divided into small chambers. Because the frame is mostly glass, it expands and contracts along with the sealed glass unit. A 2022 Construction Specifier article (written by people at a fiberglass window maker) puts the practical benefit as better protection against seal failure.

Strength is the other draw. DOE says fiberglass is stronger than vinyl, so frames can be slimmer and show more glass. The same article reports fiberglass testing about 10 times stronger than vinyl in tension. In a living room with a big picture window, the slimmer frame is something you notice every day.

Composite (Fiber-PVC) Windows

Composite is a broad label. DOE's definition is wood particles and resins compressed or extruded into frame and sash shapes. It calls these composites very stable, with structural and thermal properties as good as or better than conventional wood, plus better resistance to moisture and decay. They can be textured, stained or painted like wood.

DOE also lists hybrid frames, such as split-sash designs with an interior wood element bonded to an exterior fiberglass element. Ask the installer what the frame is actually made of, because two windows both sold as "composite" can be quite different.

Painted and Dark Fiberglass Finishes

Fiberglass frames are generally factory finished by powder coating, painting or a capstock covering, per the Construction Specifier article. That's what makes darker colors practical. The same source says fiberglass changes little between 30 and 150°F, so a dark frame in afternoon sun stays put. Vinyl starts to warp above about 140°F, by Door & Window Market's figure, which is why dark vinyl needs special reflective finishes.

If you're set on a black or dark bronze exterior, fiberglass is the material we'd price first. Our black windows page compares the dark options across materials.

Fiberglass vs Vinyl Expansion in Cold Winters

Troy winters swing a frame through a wide range: the Oakland County airport weather station averages about 24°F in January, and frames sit in full sun all summer. Construction Specifier reports that vinyl frames expand and contract more than fiberglass as temperatures change, while fiberglass shows the lowest movement of the common window materials. DOE says recent vinyl formulations have improved dimensional stability, so the gap matters most on big openings and dark colors.

Here's how we'd decide. For standard white double-hungs in a typical bedroom, vinyl replacement windows do the job for less money. For large picture windows, wide sliders, tall casements, dark colors or triple glazing, fiberglass is worth the extra.

Fiberglass Window Cost in Troy

HomeGuide's 2026 national installed prices per window:

Frame Installed per window
Fiberglass $400 to $2,000
Composite $400 to $2,300
Vinyl, for comparison $200 to $1,500

Within those ranges, the price moves with size, style, the glass package, the finish and whether the opening is an insert or a full-frame tear-out.

Replacing old aluminum windows? The jump is bigger than from vinyl. DOE's generic data puts clear double glass in a metal frame at a U-factor of 0.83, against 0.52 in a nonmetal frame, before any low-E. Construction Specifier adds that fiberglass has less than a third of aluminum's thermal expansion. For a wide aluminum slider that has sweated and frosted for decades, fiberglass is the closest match to the slim look with far better numbers. DOE's cost data shows triple glass adding to the price too.

Fiberglass Frames With Triple Glass

DOE singles out fiberglass frames as particularly well suited to heavier triple glazing because of their strength. Standard triple glass weighs a good deal more than double (the triple pane windows page has the figures), and on a large opening a fiberglass frame keeps that weight off a softer material. DOE's wood-window guideline also names triple glazing in pultruded fiberglass frames as the high-performance choice when old wood windows are replaced.

Frequently asked questions

Are fiberglass windows better than vinyl?

They insulate about the same, by industry accounts, and DOE rates both frames well. Fiberglass is stronger and moves less with temperature, so it suits large openings, dark colors and heavy triple glass. Vinyl costs less; the cost section below compares HomeGuide's national ranges.

What is a composite window?

Usually a frame made from wood particles or fibers bonded with polymer resin. DOE rates these composites well for stability and for resisting moisture and decay, and HomeGuide lists composite at $400 to $2,300 per window nationally.
