Sliding Windows in Troy

Troy Windows passes sliding window requests to one independent local installer, whether it's one kitchen slider or every wide window in a ranch or bi-level. A slider has sashes that glide sideways in the frame, so nothing swings in or out and there's no sash to lift. You can pick a two-lite or a three-lite end-vent unit, one moving sash or two, and a vinyl, fiberglass or clad-wood frame.

Sliding Window Types and Configurations

Sliders fit openings that are wider than they are tall. Because the sash moves sideways, you don't need the lifting force a hung window asks for, which matters over a counter or for anyone with weak shoulders.

Two-Lite Sliding Windows

The standard slider has two panes side by side. One moves and one is fixed, so at most half the window opens. That's plenty for a kitchen or a family room, and it keeps the price down. Over a kitchen sink, a garden window is the projecting alternative. When you shop, look at the sash interlock where the two panes meet (it locks them together for security and cuts air leakage) and at the cam lock and its keeper, which should line up and pull the sashes tight.

Three-Lite End-Vent Sliders

A three-lite slider has a fixed pane in the middle and an operable sash at each end that slides toward the center. The center pane is often wider than the two ends, so you get a picture-window view with air at both sides. End-vent units make sense on a wide living-room opening where a single slider would leave a long, heavy sash to push.

Single-Slide vs Double-Slide Sashes

On a single slider, one sash moves and the other is fixed. On a double slider, both sashes move independently, so you can open the side that catches the breeze, and many tilt or lift out for cleaning the outside glass from indoors. A double slider costs a little more. On a second floor, we'd pay for it: cleaning the outside of a fixed pane upstairs means a ladder.

Wide Sliders for Ranch and Bi-Level Homes

Ranch and bi-level houses often have long, short openings, and in our view that's slider territory. A wide slider keeps the horizontal lines of the house. On the lower level of a bi-level, a slider is also one of the escape-window options if it's big enough (see the egress note below). If you'd rather have the whole wall of glass open, compare casement windows, which open their full sash.

Sliding Window Cost in Troy

The prices below are national.

Source Sliding window, per window Data year
HomeGuide $300 to $2,300 installed 2026
Fixr $700 to $1,500 2026
Fixr, basement slider (unit only) $150 to $700 prefab; $700 to $1,000 custom 2023

The two sources disagree on the low end, so treat them as a range rather than a quote. Width drives most of the spread. Labor is a small share on simple swaps: Fixr puts labor for a small basement slider at $150 to $250. Three-lite units, double-slide sashes and fiberglass or wood frames move a slider up the range. Vinyl two-lites in standard sizes sit at the bottom.

Sliding Windows in Troy: Egress, Energy and Upkeep

Sliders as Bedroom Escape Windows

Every bedroom needs an emergency escape opening, and a slider opens only about half its width. Size the frame from the clear opening you need, not the other way round. The minimum sizes, and the well a basement bedroom also needs, are on egress window installation.

Energy Ratings

On a casement or awning, the hardware pulls the sash into its seal; a slider's sashes glide past theirs, so the air leakage figure on the NFRC label deserves a look. DOE suggests a figure no higher than 0.30, and the energy efficient windows page explains the rest of the label.

Cleaning and Upkeep

The outside glass is the slider's weak point for upkeep, unless the sash comes to you. Lift-out sashes come off the frame so both sides of the glass can be cleaned at the sink. Tilt-in double sliders pivot into the room instead. Look for fusion-welded frame and sash corners on vinyl units; they add strength and help keep cold air out. Keep the bottom track clear of grit, too; it's the first thing to check when a slider drags.

Sticky Sliders

If the frame and glass are fine and only the rollers or track are worn, window repair may be the cheaper fix.

Frequently asked questions

How much do sliding windows cost?

HomeGuide's 2026 national range is $300 to $2,300 per sliding window installed, and Fixr's is $700 to $1,500. A standard vinyl two-lite sits at the low end; wide three-lite end-vent units, double-slide sashes and fiberglass or wood frames push it up.

Can a sliding window be an egress window?

Yes, if it's big enough. Only the moving sash opens, so the clear opening is about half the frame, and the frame ends up roughly twice as wide as the opening the code asks for. Have the installer check the clear opening of the new unit, not its frame size.
